Impact

The Kainai Peacemaking Centre will be the first facility of its kind in Alberta to fully integrate Blackfoot cultural traditions with the Provincial justice system — creating a space for healing, accountability, and reconciliation. By bringing peacemaking and court services together on-Reserve, it strengthens access to justice, restores cultural connection, and supports community-led pathways to peace and wellness.

Larkspur coordinated the design and construction of the new Kainai Peacemaking Centre, a restorative justice facility that integrates traditional Blackfoot peacemaking with modern Provincial court functions. The Kainai Peacemaking Program plays a vital role in reconnecting Blackfoot offenders and victims to culture, community, and healing — a process rooted in reconciliation and recovery from intergenerational trauma.

Located in Stand Off, Alberta, the facility will provide a centralized home for peacemaking programs and justice services, increasing access to culturally grounded supports while meeting the operational needs of Alberta Justice. Designed around Blackfoot traditions — incorporating sacred colours, iconography, and landscape references — the 2,390 m² (25,725 ft²) building includes spaces for administration, ceremonial activities, and Provincial court operations.

Larkspur Projects is located in Calgary, on the ancestral and traditional territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy — the Niitsitapi peoples, including the Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, and Amskapi Piikani. We also acknowledge the shared lands of the Tsuut’ina (Dene) and the Îyârhe Nakoda (Stoney) Nations — Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Goodstoney. This is also the homeland of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, including Métis Nation Battle River Territory, Districts 5 and 6.

The place we now call Calgary has long been known as Moh’kins’tsis by the Blackfoot, Guts’ists’i by the Tsuut’ina, and Wîchîspa by the Îyârhe Nakoda. We recognize, honour, and give thanks to the original caretakers of this land, and commit ourselves to building respectful relationships with the peoples whose histories, languages, and cultures continue to shape this place.
