Located in Lavern, Alberta on the Blood Reserve, Issoitapi Elementary School provides a new home for kindergarten to Grade 5 students of the Blood Tribe. The previous facility had outgrown its capacity and no longer reflected the community’s educational or cultural aspirations. The new 6,100-square-metre school replaces aging infrastructure with a modern, energy-efficient building designed to enhance learning, wellness, and connection to culture.
Developed through a collaborative process grounded in Niitsitapi values and the Blackfoot worldview, the design reflects the community’s commitment to reconciliation, sustainability, and educational excellence. The school accommodates more than 500 students and includes adaptable classrooms, cultural and community gathering areas, and flexible learning spaces that support 21st-century teaching and holistic development.
